X-Road is an open-source platform built by The Nordic Institute for Interoperability Solutions (NIIS). Estonia, like many countries and companies, had siloed databases and systems that were contributing to a disjointed digital experience for citizens and were slow and inefficient for the government. By creating a seamless, standardized data exchange platform — one that could be easily scaled to other environments — X-Road enabled interoperability for more efficient public services.
